How to Choose Sneakers? A Buying Guide for Sneakers in Different Sports Scenarios

Sneakers are no longer just shoes for sports. They are both sports gear and an important part of everyday wear. Seeing a pair of shoes with a beautiful color and unique design, I easily get the illusion that “these must be very comfortable.” However, after wearing them for a while, I slowly realize that good-looking shoes are not necessarily suitable for my lifestyle. Some shoes are suitable for running but not for long periods of shopping; some shoes are very stable but not suitable for sports requiring a lot of movement; and some shoes may not have particularly professional sports performance, but have become my everyday shoes that I’m willing to wear all year round. So now when buying sneakers, I don’t just ask myself “Does it look good?”, but rather, “In what scenarios do I plan to wear it?”

Now, before buying shoes, I always imagine myself actually wearing them. If I’m going to run, I pay more attention to cushioning, rebound, breathability, and weight. I want the shoes to move with my steps when I run, rather than making me constantly worry about discomfort in my feet. If I’m going to the gym, I prioritize stability. Especially when doing strength training, I need a solid feel underfoot, not just a soft sole. For shopping, traveling, or commuting, I pay more attention to comfort, color, and versatility. I want a pair of shoes that can accompany me from morning till night, still feel comfortable, and go with most clothes in my wardrobe. I now believe that no single shoe is suitable for every occasion; the truly suitable shoe for me is one that matches my lifestyle.

I. Outfit Recommendation 1: HOKA Clifton + Lightweight Sportswear

For everyday running, I recently like to pair my HOKA Clifton with lightweight sportswear. I usually choose white, gray, or other simple Clifton colorways, paired with loose-fitting athletic shorts and a lightweight athletic T-shirt. If the weather is cooler, I’ll add a light windproof jacket.

Design Highlights
One thing I like about the HOKA Clifton is that although it has a very defined athletic shoe silhouette, it doesn’t feel overly complicated. Especially when I wear simpler sportswear, the Clifton’s thick sole adds depth to the overall look. I really enjoy this feeling. When I leave in the morning, I don’t need to spend too much time thinking about what to wear. A simple sports T-shirt, shorts, and a pair of Cliftons complete the look. I’ve also found that athletic shoes don’t necessarily need to be brightly colored to look sporty. For me, understated colors like white, gray, and black are more timeless and better suit my minimalist style.

Material and Texture
When running, I pay special attention to the breathability of the upper. I love the lightness of Cliftons. For example, the Clifton series uses a breathable knit/mesh upper combined with HOKA’s own cushioning and rolling design, which is one of the reasons I like it as an everyday running shoe. Sometimes, a shoe that’s light enough and has a simple upper feels more premium. When I run in Cliftons, I love the feeling that “the shoe doesn’t constantly remind me it’s there.”

Functionality and Practicality
When running, my biggest concern is the feeling of my foot landing. I wanted shoes that provided sufficient cushioning without making my feet feel completely unsupported. The Clifton felt relaxed, making it perfect for my everyday running and jogging. A state I really enjoy is when, after running for a while, I’m completely in my own rhythm and even forget I’m wearing shoes. It doesn’t just make me look like a runner; it truly gives me the feeling of “I could run a little more today.”

When buying HOKA Cliftons, I usually prioritize the official HOKA online store and HOKA physical stores. If I want to compare different colors or find other sizes, I’ll also check out large local athletic shoe retailers. Currently, the HOKA official channels still carry the Clifton series, positioning it as an everyday running and walking shoe.

II. Outfit Recommendation 2: Nike Metcon + Track Pants + Short Top
If I’m going to the gym, my choices are completely different. In this case, I prefer the Nike Metcon, paired with high-waisted or straight-leg track pants and a short top.

Design Highlights

I like the clean lines of the Nike Metcon. Unlike some running shoes that emphasize softness and streamlined design, these shoes give me a more stable and powerful visual effect. When I wear them, I feel more energetic and refreshed. Especially when paired with slightly tapered athletic pants, the shoe’s silhouette becomes more defined. I like this powerful athletic look, but I don’t want to look like I’m wearing a full set of professional sports gear.

Material and Texture
When choosing training shoes, I pay close attention to the fit. When wearing Nike Metcon, I prefer the feeling of my foot being firmly anchored. For me, training shoes can’t be too soft; otherwise, I’ll feel a significant lack of stability during strength training. Nike’s current Metcon series is primarily aimed at training and fitness, and the official product description emphasizes a wide, flat heel, grip, and stability during training. This feel is completely different from running shoes. When running, I want the shoes to help me move forward; when working out, I want the shoes to help me stay grounded.

Functionality and Practicality
I prefer using Nike Metcon for strength training. Especially during squats, deadlifts, or exercises requiring a stable stance, I notice the stability of the sole much more clearly. I used to think that the softer the athletic shoe, the more comfortable it was, but my thinking has completely changed. Now I believe true comfort isn’t about blindly pursuing softness, but rather about the shoe’s performance being perfectly suited to the activity I’m doing. This is why I don’t substitute running shoes for training shoes. If I’m running, I’ll choose Clifton; if I’m doing strength training, I prefer Metcon. For me, this distinction makes me more comfortable.

Buying Nike Metcon shoes is relatively easy for me. I first check the official Nike online store and Nike physical stores. If I want to compare different colors and sizes, I also keep an eye on major athletic shoe retailers like Dick’s Sporting Goods and Foot Locker. Nike’s current Metcon series still includes training shoes like the Metcon 10 and Free Metcon 7, so if I’m going to buy one, I usually first determine whether I need a strength-focused or more comprehensive training shoe.

III. Outfit Recommendation 3: New Balance 574 + Straight Leg Jeans + Loose Shirt

If I don’t have a specific workout plan for the day, my favorite is actually the New Balance 574. It’s also the pair of shoes that’s easiest for me to incorporate into everyday life out of the three I own. I usually pair them with straight leg jeans and a loose shirt, sometimes switching to a simple white T-shirt or knit top.

Design Highlights

I especially love the retro silhouette of the New Balance 574. It doesn’t give me the overly technological feel of professional running shoes; instead, it has a very natural retro vibe. I particularly like the more understated colors like gray, beige, and navy blue. Wearing them makes my outfit feel noticeably more relaxed. Sometimes I don’t even plan my outfit in advance; I just put on a pair of straight leg jeans, a loose shirt, change into the 574, and I’m good to go. This effortless feeling is always my favorite way to dress.

Material and Texture

Another reason I love the New Balance 574 is its rich texture and layering. The classic 574 typically combines suede and mesh, and the variation in textures prevents the shoe from looking monotonous even with simple colors. New Balance still officially markets the 574 as a classic lifestyle shoe, offering various men’s and women’s styles and colorways. I especially love pairing these shoes with jeans. The denim fabric itself has a texture, while the suede and fabric upper adds another layer of sophistication. Together, the overall look feels very natural.

Functionality and Practicality

While I don’t consider the 574 a professional running shoe, it’s practical enough for my daily life. I wear it shopping, traveling, having coffee, and even walking around the city all day. My favorite feeling is when I look in the mirror in the morning and think it looks great, and even after walking a lot in the evening, my feet aren’t particularly tired. Because the shoes you wear most frequently aren’t necessarily the highest-performing ones, but rather the ones that naturally become part of your life and that you’d want to wear repeatedly.

When buying New Balance 574s, I prioritize the official New Balance online store and New Balance physical stores. If I want to compare different colorways, I also pay attention to major retail platforms like Nordstrom and Foot Locker. New Balance still officially offers the 574 series, with men’s, women’s, and unisex options.

Besides sports, I now consider my wardrobe when buying shoes. If I already have a lot of black, gray, and white clothes, I might choose a pair of sneakers with a touch of color to make them a small highlight of the outfit. If my clothes are already quite colorful, I’ll choose simpler shoes. I also like to observe the relationship between shoes and pants. Loose pants paired with structured sneakers give me a more street-style feel; straight-leg jeans paired with retro sneakers look more natural. And athletic shorts paired with lightweight running shoes make me feel lighter and more agile.

I often only looked at my usual shoe size. Now I try them on more carefully.

If possible, I’ll try on shoes in the afternoon or evening, as my feet may feel different after a day’s activities. I’ll also allow my toes enough room to move, rather than choosing a size that’s too tight in pursuit of a “just right” fit. I’ll also consider how often I’ll wear them. If it’s a professional running shoe, I’ll think about how many times a week I’ll run; if it’s an everyday shoe, I’ll consider whether it goes well with most of my wardrobe. I think this is more important than simply looking at the price. Even if a pair of shoes is expensive, if I only wear it a few times a year, it might not be a good choice for me.

V. Which of these three pairs of shoes would I choose?

If I had to compare these three pairs of shoes side by side, here’s how I would choose:
When I want to run, I’d choose the HOKA Clifton.

I like its lightweight, cushioned feel, and I also like the refreshing feeling it gives when paired with lightweight workout clothes.

When I go to the gym, I’d choose the Nike Metcon.

I value the stability it provides, especially during strength training, where I feel more stable.

For everyday shopping, travel, or casual wear, I choose the New Balance 574.

It might not be the most high-performing of the three shoes, but it’s the one most easily incorporated into my daily life.

Before, when buying shoes, I first considered whether they were trendy; now, I think about whether they suit me. The HOKA Clifton makes running easier, the Nike Metcon provides more stability during workouts, and the New Balance 574 gives me a natural sense of ease in everyday wear. I’m increasingly convinced that the sneakers truly worth wearing long-term aren’t necessarily the most expensive, the most popular, or the most extravagantly designed. The shoes that truly suit me are the ones I’m willing to wear again and again. They can accompany me running, and they can accompany me shopping; they can be workout gear, and they can be part of my outfit. When a sneaker simultaneously satisfies my aesthetic sense, comfort, athletic needs, and lifestyle, it truly becomes “my shoe.” This is also the thing I care about most when choosing sneakers now: not buying shoes to follow trends, but finding the pair that truly suits me.
